What can beat waking up to the sound of the ocean? Well there are many things like winning $80 million on the lottery. But seeing the ocean and hearing it when you awake is so relaxing and something I could get used to.
Back to reality and we were soon off to our first surprise activity of the day, visiting Summer Bay. It may not sound exciting, but to a lot of Alf Stewart fans around the world, they would scream with excitement. It is where the Australian soap opera ‘Home and Away’ is filmed, when ‘on location’, and to our suprise, they were filming today too. I quickly found out that Derv is an avid follower of the soap, so she was excited by seeing the actors in the flesh. Unfortunately, I have never watched it. So I didn’t know who was an extra and who was a ‘real’ actor. But I did enjoy watching how they make television shows with such a quick turnaround. It didn’t look they did any rehearsals and moved onto the next scene promptly. I had to try enjoy something since I didn’t know anyone there ok.
We then hit up the beach for some boomarang throwing, which went really well. NOT. Rumour has it they are supposed to come back to you when you throw them. I have yet to see evidence this is true.
Next stop was Four Pines Brewery for a bite to eat and a little ale. The staff there are VERY friendly and the food was great. We were given a number of beers they make to try out. I am not a massive beer fan (can drink lager that is all) so I supped, smiled, and put back down. Then Brewer Pete took us on a tour of the brewery. Tour being the deceiving word there. It was one small room where they made their own beer. He told us how the process was done, and told us about all the wild nights they have had in this room. Ok the last bit is a lie. We then said our thank yous to the staff and headed on down to Darling Harbour.
Darling Harbour was where we had visited earlier in the week to visit the aquarium. This time it was for a site of whale watching. The boat left this harbour, and it would have left earlier had it not been for the bad parking of the camera crew. So we apologise to any of the other passengers who may possibly read this. We went a few miles out and down the coast to find a pod of humpback whales plodding on up the continent on there yearly migration. They weren’t the smallest of creatures, and seeing these was something I had always wanted to do. However, there was no sharks. I did pretend to myself, and a few of the others that a piece of rubbish/litter was a sharks fin. It’s funny what you can believe if you keep telling yourself. We then ‘tried’ to head back to shore, to find out that one of the engines had blown. But after numerous ‘resets’ and our own migration to the front of the boat, we were on our way.
We then checked in to our new hotel. It was a little different to what we had experienced so far this week. It was the Sydney Central Youth Hostel. Very basic, but it’s what you expect. The staff were really nice, so if you are looking for a place to stay on a budget, then look no further. No I aren’t on commission.
In bed of the Sydney Youth Hostel is where I write this blog and shortly I will be hitting the hay for our big day tomorrow. So much is going on I can’t even remember. I do know that me, Derv and the camera boys are climbing the Sydney Harbour bridge at about 9am’ish. Good times!

the best part of this was, and i quote, “It’s funny what you can believe if you keep telling yourself,” because that is just sooo true.
i’m also wondering what you would have done if you had actually encountered a shark. especially since a fast getaway in the speedboat was clearly not meant to happen.
can’t believe you guys are half-way done with this amazing adventure….or are you?!!!

Now if only bungee jumping from the bridge was on the itenery, that would be awesome. Quite jealous over the whales but yeah I think looking for sharks would be my main distraction.Whales are peaceful, sharks exciting, I pick sharks. I’ve seen killer whales and petted buluga whales but that’s it. Have fun with the rest of the trip
